The Smoke War, also known as the Celestial-Ashkal Proxy Conflicts, is the ongoing struggle for influence and political dominance over the Seres between the Celestial Hegemony and the Eternal Alliance against Ashkal and the Allied Sovereign Nations. The two countries have provided varying degrees of support to opposing sides in many conflicts, including the civil wars in Cedronia, Sertoria, and Barcasia. The rivalry also extends to domestic struggles for independence in Ashkali colonies and the Celestial-claimed lands of the Coastal League.

The conflict is waged on multiple levels over geopolitical, economic, and sectarian influence in pursuit of global hegemony. Due to the two states being successors of older superpowers, many see this conflict as a continuation of a two-century long conflict over the future of the known world.

The rivalry today is primarily a political and economic struggle exacerbated by religious differences, and sectarianism in the world is exploited by both countries for geopolitical purposes as part of a larger conflict. Ashkal is a secular federation of democratic governments, while the Celestial Hegemony, an authoritarian theocracy, sees itself as the champion of sovereignty for nations against Ashkali influence.
